The descripcion of the ilandes and firme land of the ocean sea : which are called the West Indies, circa 1624 / by Antonio of Herrera cheife chronicler of the Indies, and chronicler of Castill.

Manuscript, on paper, in a single secretary hand, of the translation of Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas' Descripcion de las Indias Occidentales that was published in Purchas his Pilgrimes in 1625. The text's thirty-two chapters discuss various Caribbean islands, several regions of Mexico and Central America, and South American colonies including Brazil. The author also describes the Council of the Indies and the relations of the Catholic Church and the colonial governments. While this text does not reproduce the maps included in the original, there are detailed notes by the translator regarding the placement of these maps.
